Education sets the foundation for how we learn for the rest of our lives, and we went straight to the classroom to study today’s challenges in the education system. We were kindly hosted by Sage Hill School, and we learned about what school administrators are facing from the excellent panel including Gordon McNeill, President of Sage Hill School, Dr. Fred Navarro, Superintendent, Newport Mesa Unified School District and Kathie Nielsen, Chief Academic Officer, Tustin Unified District. Next, we took a tour of the facility at Sage Hill led by very passionate and bright students. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) is becoming an even more prominent topic in the education system, and there are opportunities for students to dive into these subjects at early ages. We heard from Eureka, Girls Inc and Mind Research and learned about the work they do to make students feel comfortable about the failures and successes of the learning process by working in groups and providing very intentional programs.  We gained a new perspective on the social element of school from Erica Sperling, Newport Beach Police Department Crime Prevention Specialist. Cyber bullying is a growing problem, and it was helpful to see the process that follows the report of an incident. There are so many people working hard behind the scenes to create a safe atmosphere for students. We were truly inspired after this workshop filled with passionate speakers and students who are all paving the way for what education will look like in the future.

What an amazing day spent learning all about our water, from how it's reclaimed to how the Coast Guard responds to emergencies on the water!

What an amazing day spent learning all about our water, from how it's reclaimed to how the Coast Guard responds to emergencies on the water! The tour of the Irvine Ranch Water District was especially enlightening as we got to learn, and see and smell for ourselves, precisely how our waste water goes from our morning showers to the evening golf courses. Another highlight was the Coast Guard facility tour, we learned about how they respond to calls, monitor for weather conditions, and keep the area safe.  All kinds of crises occur here, but this hardworking team also had some stories that made us laugh. The best part was that we got an inside look at the boats they use in emergencies! They were AWESOME! The day ended with a harbor cruise, and it couldn't have been more perfect.

At Workshop #1, the room was buzzing with excitement! What better way to kick-off the year than learning about the rich history of Orange County? This class was filled with a diverse range of professionals from firemen, to sales managers, to city workers. Although the individuals in this group come from different cities and fields, it is clear they are dedicated and excited to learn about the inner-workings of the community here in Orange County. From networking to teambuilding, we’d say Workshop #1 was a success!

Lobsterfest 2014

Once again held outdoors on the beautiful Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort & Marina property, Lobsterfest 2013 was a tremendous success. An estimated 2,000 lobsters were flown in fresh the morning of Saturday August 10 for the event, which also featured a buffet of tri-tip, corn-on-the-cob, salads and dessert, as well as live music and plenty of dancing!

Lobsterfest 2014 was able to grant the wish of one child with Make-A-Wish® Orange County and the Inland Empire, as well as provide scholarships for some of newest class members in Leadership Tomorrow.

Mark your calendars for next year's event on Saturday, August 9, 2014.
